Position Summary:

The Senior Vice President of Rights and Royalties will serve as a senior leader within the Nashville BMG office as well the BMG Rights and Royalties organization. As a senior leader, the SVP of Rights and Royalties goal will be to build and maintain a high performing organization with the aim of providing value to BMG clients, stakeholders, and employees. Using years of diverse experience in the music industry, the SVP will ensure that all their focus areas are running efficiently. As a leader of leaders, they will work daily to ensure the BMG Rights and Royalties organization is prepared for the future.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership 

  • Lead an organization of 20-30 employees who cover a broad range of responsibilities. Directly manage the leaders of the following teams:

    • Royalty Services 

    • Royalty Processes 

    • Recorded Administration 

  • Establish strong relationships with BMG’s business leaders.

  • Train and develop talent within teams. 

  • Establish and report KPIs for each area of responsibility. 

  • Communicate and, when needed, escalate client inquiries to US business leads. 

  • Improve workflows and processes. 

  • Actively work to remove roadblocks that prevent team members from success in their tasks. 

  • Collaborate with peers in other territories to ensure continuity of tasks and processes. 

  • Act as an escalation point for staff. Must have a keen awareness of when to escalate further. 

  • Represent the EVP in meetings and events when they are unable to attend.

Royalty Services 

  • Lead in maintaining and developing relationships with partners. Including, but not limited to: 

    • Writers/artists/clients

    • Performing rights organizations

    • Co-publishers

  • Industry organizations. 

  • Oversee the complete processing of BMG’s US music publishing agreements.  

  • Ensure that senior management are apprised of significant client inquiries and update them regularly through resolution.   

  • Ensure complete and accurate execution of royalty distribution processes.  

  • Oversee regular reviews of significant accounts to track performance versus expectations.

  • Provide high quality insights based on analysis of royalty data. 

  • Meet regularly with stakeholders in the business to keep them apprised of the financial performance of key deals.

Recorded Administration 

  • Lead in maintaining and developing relationships with partners in the recorded music space. 

  • Oversee the complete processing of BMG’s US recording agreements.  

  • Lead the teams who are overseeing BMG’s obligations to music publishers as it related to mechanical licensing and royalties.  

Royalty Processing 

  • Oversee BMG’s US based royalty processing organization. 

  • Set direction and strategy for BMG US’s processing efforts. 

  • Improve processes related to the administration of direct performance licenses. 

  • Improve processes related to the distribution of amounts not allocated by title or usage. 

Copyright Administration 

  • Oversee BMG’s US based Copyright teams covering the following areas:

    • Song delivery  

    • Mechanical Licensing and Sample Clearance 

    • USCO Registration 

    • AV Copyright Administration 

    • Copyright Research and Information Services 

Regional Rights and Royalties 

  • Provide leadership and support for LATAM and AU local teams in areas of expertise. 

Digital Licensing 

  • Work with Legal and Business Affairs to ensure operational excellence related to direct digital licensing. 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Advanced understanding of music publishing and copyright industry practices.  

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (basic understanding of SQL or Python is a plus). 

  • Experience with tracking and collaboration tools such as JIRA and Confluence.  

  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills and the ability to identify when information is incomplete. 

  • Strong contract interpretation skills and experience.  

Background Requirements:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree preferred. 

  • 15+ years or relevant experience including 10+ years of experience managing people and leading teams. Experience working at a DSP or CMO is a plus.
