Background: 

Founded in 2014, The Tournament is owned by Jon Mugar and Chris Paul. It specializes in hosting high-stakes, open-to-all sporting events distributed across the world. The Tournament’s first property, The Basketball Tournament (TBT), has crowned ten champions, awarded more than $14 million in prizes, and ushered in innovations such as the Elam Ending® and its signature postgame bracket celebration, since adopted by the NBA and NCAA respectively. Games have aired live on ESPN for 10 years.

In 2023, The Tournament launched The Soccer Tournament (TST), an open-application, million-dollar, winner-take-all world championship for 7v7 soccer. Teams faced off in a 32-team, World Cup-style competition on NBC/Peacock. It featured teams from across the world, including clubs from the English Premier League and Bundesliga. In 2024, TST is expanding the main field to 48 teams and adding an Equal Pay women’s soccer tournament, which will feature yet another unprecedented, $1 million, winner-take-all prize.

As The Tournament moves forward, growth will consist of continued expansion within the current sport verticals, as well as horizontal expansion into new sports.

Position Summary: 

We are seeking a highly motivated, entrepreneurial and experienced Sr. Manager of Partnership Sales to join our team. This role is ideal for someone with a strong track record in partnership development and a passion for sports. The role will focus on maximizing revenue potential of existing properties, as well working on the development and launch of new properties. Key attributes of a candidate include desire to work in a high upside, performance-based role with ability to grow a book of business and a team across multiple properties.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and expand the company's business development initiatives with a focus on national/global sponsorships

  • Develop a strong, growing and healthy active partner pipeline/CRM with consistent communication

  • Develop and manage all sponsorship and media inventory tracking systems

  • Develop and manage all sponsorship processes including target lists, packaging, sales materials, revenue tracking, etc.

  • Proactively identify and pursue new partnership opportunities through networking, consistent outreach, connecting through partners, and beyond.

  • Maintain strong relationships and unlock partner opportunities through key Tournament stakeholders including teams, host sites, distribution partners, and other third party partners.

  • Collaborate closely with internal teams to develop commercial packages ensuring profitability and proper execution

Required Qualifications:

  • 5-8 years of experience in business development, preferably in the sports or related industries.

  • Proven history of successful partnership development and account acquisition.

  • Strong network and established relationships with brands in the sports industry.

  • Excellent communication, storytelling and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to work independently with a strong drive to succeed.

  • Experience managing a sales funnel / database / target lists

  • Familiarity with media and event assets in the sports industry.

  • Experience conducting outreach through CRM platforms a plus (i.e hubspot)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or related field.

He is broadly networked and wired with property sales executives, as well as agency & brand marketing executives. Since joining TurnkeyZRG, he has successfully placed executives at Ilitch Sports & Entertainment, IMG, TelevisaUnivision, Orlando City Soccer & the Orlando Pride, the Miami Dolphins, the Atlanta Dream and more.

James Jordan - Director, Marketing Partnerships

James Jordan joined TurnkeyZRG in early 2023 in the role of Director, Marketing Partnerships, focused on corporate partnership recruiting. Mr. Jordan has made an immediate impact, placing partnership executives at organizations including the Golden State Warriors, LA Chargers, LaLiga, the Laver Cup, and more. Prior to joining TurnkeyZRG, James garnered valuable experience on both the strategy side and sales side of the corporate partnership business and has represented marquee teams and venues including the LA Rams (NFL), LA Chargers (NFL) and SoFi Stadium & Hollywood Park (Los Angeles, CA).
